Most effective ways to learn Japanese as an English speaker.

Working on improving your Japanese skills?

Learning any new language is difficult and it can feel like stepping into a whole new world. The path to fluency is a challenging journey that requires dedication and passion. Many strategic learning methods make this process much easier and enjoyable, so implement these tips into your routine and see results! Take the time to focus on learning the pillars of Japanese and the basics of the language, making sure to establish a regular routine.

Learn the alphabet

Imagine someone learning to speak English without knowing the alphabet?OK, let’s become realistic. Learn the Japanese alphabet first for the fast lane. But why does the Japanese language have three writing systems. Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji?

      • Hiragana

In this alphabet, there are 46 characters and 51 phonetic characters. Hiragana is debatably the easiest of the three alphabets to learn because most of the characters have only one pronunciation. Once you learn Hiragana, you will have a very solid foundation for the rest of your journey, because it is also fundamental for knowing the grammar structure, post positions and conjugations.

        • Katakana

Katakana is used for loanwords meaning words that have been adopted from another language. It is more difficult than Hiragana and is not as frequently used for beginner Japanese speakers. Once your level of speaking increases, this will appear more often, like in your favorite cafe menus or ramen hidden menus.

          • Kanji

Kanji is made up of thousands of Chinese symbols that represent words, ideas and phrases and it is believed by many to be the most challenging to learn. It is, however, a very logical and fun character to learn because they are mostly basic modules put together to conform to different meanings. They are also critical aspects of increasing the Japanese vocabulary.

        Embrace listening

Listening to any language is one of the most effective ways to understand it and learn the most accurate pronunciation of words. Engaging with Japanese media such as movies and TV shows, listening to Japanese music, or podcasts are great ways to immerse yourself in the language. Try to surround yourself with the language as much as possible, this will make it easier to remember what is being said and make you more comfortable jumping in on conversations.

Do not be afraid to fail

A significant barrier in learning any language is always the fear of making a mistake. Never forget that you are learning! Do not hesitate to converse with a native speaker in fear that you may make a mistake. Each error is a learning opportunity and helps you refine your skills.

        Apply the language daily

Do not give up, and remember to practice every day! An easy way to hold yourself accountable is to download a language teaching app. This way you can track your progress as well. Practice by yourself in front of the mirror and label things in your home or daily life so you can read what they are and say the words aloud
