Preparing your child for a new school year in Japan

Starting a new school year in a different country can be both scary and exciting, especially for children who are adjusting to a new culture and language. As a parent, there are several helpful ways to ensure your child transitions smoothly into their new school environment in Japan.

Understanding the Japanese School System

Familiarizing yourself with the Japanese school system is definitely beneficial. In Japan, the school year typically starts in April and ends in March and is divided into three terms. Summer break is in August, winter break is around the New Year and there is a spring break in March. The schools are divided into elementary, junior high and high school. Elementary school here lasts for six years and junior high and high school last for three.

Language Preparation

One of the biggest challenges when transitioning into a new school in a new country is the language barrier. Help your child learn to say basic Japanese phrases that will allow them to get by like greetings or asking for help.

Enroll you or your child in Japanese language classes that will help them develop valuable language skills at Toranomon Language School.

Having a general knowledge of how to speak Japanese will make for a much easier transition for your child and make them more comfortable in their environment.

Cultural Familiarization

Teach your child about Japanese customs and etiquette and proper classroom behavior. Discuss the importance of respect for teachers and peers, which is highly valued in Japanese culture.

Academic Preparation

Try and form a general understanding of the subjects your child will be studying and help them fill any gaps in knowledge they may need extra help with. Establish a regular study routine and stick to it, making sure to have a quiet study space at home to encourage your child to stay focused.

Social Integration

It is normal for your child to feel antisocial or scared to participate but try and encourage them to join clubs and activities that may help them meet new friends. Extracurricular activities are a great way for children to build social connections. They may feel homesick if you have just recently moved to Japan, so make sure to have open discussions with them about how they are feeling.

Stay involved

Establish a relationship with your child’s teacher to stay informed about their progress or anything that may be difficult for them. Definitely try and attend any offered parent-teacher conferences to stay engaged within the school community. A connection with the staff can provide additional support for your child.

Search for an online social media group related to parenting and schooling in Japan, these communities can be very useful for sharing experiencing or gaining advice.

Following these tips will allow you to create a nurturing and supportive environment that will help your child thrive in their language learning journey.
