Japan is a country where natural disasters, particularly earthquakes, are very common. For those living and working here, understanding how to respond in critical moments is not only a matter of safety but also of responsibility to one’s colleagues and community. Disaster preparedness is an essential skill, but for many foreign workers, the language barrier can make learning these procedures overwhelming.
At Toranomon Language School, we had the opportunity to support Mitsui O.S.K. Lines by providing corporate training services during a recent Disaster Prevention Workshop. Our role was to act as a bridge between the Japanese collaboration workshop with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and Minato-ku Disaster Prevention Division for the company’s foreign employees, ensuring that key information was conveyed clearly and effectively.
Through bilingual guidance and real-time translation, our instructors helped participants understand the core objectives of the training:
- Safety measures to prepare for a state of emergency.
- How to react quickly and calmly during an earthquake.
- Where to seek safety and how to navigate evacuation procedures.
This collaboration highlighted a crucial need: while Japan has robust disaster preparedness systems, foreign professionals often require additional support to fully grasp the protocols. Language services are not just about communication—they are about ensuring that everyone, regardless of nationality or language ability, can act with confidence in moments of crisis.
For new foreign employees in particular, this type of training is invaluable. It provides peace of mind, fosters stronger integration into the workplace, and ensures that no one is left behind when it matters most.
At Toranomon Language School, we are proud to contribute to building safer, more inclusive workplaces through our corporate training programs. By combining language instruction with cultural and practical guidance, we help international employees thrive in Japan—not only in their professional roles but also in life-critical situations such as disaster response.
