In this article, we will take a look at some of the new events that will be added to the Tokyo Olympics 2021, as well as some notable Japanese athletes. Let’s take a look at some of the new events that will be added to the Tokyo Olympics 2021, as well as some of the Japanese athletes to watch.
Five Newly adopted competitions
The Tokyo Olympic Games are about to start, and five new sports and 34 events will be added to the Games.
- karate
It has its roots in Okinawa, Japan. There are two events, “Kata” and “Kumite”.
Kata is a series of thrusts, kicks, ukes, and other techniques performed in a predetermined order, and is a method of training performed by one person.
Kumite is performed in pairs, and can be divided into “Promised Kumite,” in which both the attacker and the receiver use predetermined techniques, “Jiyu Kumite,” in which both sides freely use techniques, and “Kumite Matches,” in which the winner is decided by a competition of “Jiyu Kumite.
In general, the movements of Promised Kumite are similar to those of Kata, but in Jiyu Kumite, the movements are different from those of Kata because they correspond to the style adopted by the school (e.g., Sutemi or Direct Hit System).
Ryo Kiyuna, from Okinawa Prefecture, the birthplace of karate, is considered by karate fans around the world to be the man closest to the gold medal. He is so good that he has been recognized by Guinness World Records for winning the 2020 KARATE1 Premier League tournament 19 times in a row. Also, if he wins the gold medal, it will be the first time in the history of his hometown, Okinawa.
- skateboard
There are two events: “Street” and “Park”. Competitors compete one at a time, and are scored on the difficulty and originality of their moves.
Park, people ride freely and show off their skills using a large course that looks like a swimming pool without any water in it.
Street, on the other hand, is a style of riding that uses steps and stair railings in the city
Ayumu Hirano, the fifth Japanese athlete in the history of Japan to participate in the Summer and Winter Olympics, will be the focus of attention. He said “I’ve been skateboarding since I started snowboarding, so I want to express my height and speed. I want to convey my own unique style.”
In fact, in Japan, many people mistakenly think of skateboarding as a “delinquent’s game”. That’s why many skateboarders are saying, “I want to win this competition and improve the image of skateboarding,” and “I want people to know that it’s a fun sport.
Looking at the world rankings, Japanese skateboarders are the leading candidates for medals, and this is definitely an event to watch.
- sports climbing
The competition is a combination of three events: speed, bouldering, and lead.
In the speed event, two competitors climb a 15-meter high wall side by side. The first one to reach the top wins, plain and simple.
In bouldering, the challenge (route) is set on a steep 4.5 meter high structure (boulder), and the contestants compete to see how many of the routes they can clear.
In lead, the winner is determined by how high they can climb a 15-meter-high wall within a six-minute time limit.
The top eight finishers with the lowest scores advance to the finals, where they are multiplied by their ranking in each event to get a total score. The top eight athletes with the lowest scores advance to the finals, where they will compete in three more events.
The level of Japanese athletes is high, with Tomoa Narazaki in the men’s race and Keiyo Noguchi in the women’s race expected to win medals.
- surfing
The event is held at Tsurigasaki Beach in Chiba, about 100 kilometers away from the Olympic Stadium (National Stadium) in Tokyo.
It is common to ride 10 to 12 times, of which only the two highest scoring waves are awarded.
Since no two waves are the same, the judges score the waves based on five criteria, including difficulty, innovation, speed, power, and flow.
Incidentally, the venue for the surfing event, Tsurigasaki Beach in Chiba Prefecture, is also known as a sacred place for surfers, attracting surfers from all over the world.
And Hiroto Ohara, from Ichinomiya Town where this Tsurigasaki Beach is located, has been unofficially selected to represent Japan in surfing. Ohara is not only attracting attention as a local athlete, but he also has proven his ability, winning his first world championship at the age of 15.
- baseball and soft ball (It has been excluded since the 2008 Beijing Games.)
The main difference between baseball and softball is whether the pitcher throws well (baseball) or poorly (softball).
Incidentally, baseball stars do not participate in the Olympics. This is because it coincides with the US Major League Baseball (MLB) season.
In Japan, the popularity of baseball is strong and it is no exaggeration to say that Japanese people have high expectations for this sport.
The Japanese team is called “Samurai Japan” and its members are mainly members of the winning team of the Premier 12 held in 2019.Among them, Yoshinobu Yamamoto is the core of the pitching staff and should be watched as the most promising pitcher in the game.
Softball also won a gold medal at the 2012 Beijing Olympics, which sent the whole country into a frenzy. The player to watch out for is Yukiko Ueno, who has such a great sense of hitting that she is known as the “Shohei Otani of the softball world.
The games for this tournament have already started, and they are going well, winning their first game against Australia.
Other new events, Nine new mixed gender events will be added in seven sports.(Archery, track and field, shooting, table tennis, judo, swimming, triathlon)
First time without an audience
As for this Olympics, it was decided that venues in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, and Saitama will be held without spectators.
In response, Maya Yoshida, a member of the Japanese national soccer team, said, “I hope you will reconsider holding the Games with spectators. I understand that we are in a position where we should be grateful just to be able to hold the Olympics. Even so, I couldn’t help but raise my voice,” he appealed.
I hope that the Tokyo Olympics, which will be held without spectators, will be a success.
