If you’ve started learning Japanese, chances are you’ve stumbled over は (wa) そして が (ga). Even intermediate learners struggle with these two particles, because English doesn’t have a direct equivalent. Let’s break it down in a way that makes sense.
は = Topic Marker
Think of は as setting the stage of your sentence. It tells your listener, “This is what we’re talking about now.”
Examples:
- 日本語は難しいです。
(As for Japanese, it’s difficult.) - 明日は雨です。
(As for tomorrow, it will rain.) - 私は学生です。
(As for me, I’m a student.)
が = Subject Marker
が points out the specific subject that performs an action or is being described. It is often used when introducing new information or when you want to emphasize the subject itself.
Examples:
- 猫が好きです。
(I like cats.) - 誰が来ますか。
(Who is coming?) - 田中さんが先生です。
(Mr. Tanaka is the teacher.)
Comparing は and が Together
A useful way to see the difference is when they appear in the same sentence:
- 私は猫が好きです。
(As for me, I like cats.) - この本は田中さんが書きました。
(As for this book, Mr. Tanaka wrote it.)
Here, は sets the general topic, while が highlights the specific subject or new piece of information.
Understanding the Nuance
So when should you use each? は works best when you are introducing or shifting the topic of the conversation, while が is better when highlighting who or what is doing something, or when presenting new or emphasized information. For many learners, this difference feels abstract at first. With regular practice in conversation, reading, and listening, the nuance becomes clearer over time. Think of it as a natural part of progressing in Japanese, rather than something you need to master immediately.
